Speckman Realty began as an independently owned and operated real estate company in1946 under local owner and Broker Ray Speckman. Since it’s inception, with it’s first office in Kankakee, Speckman began a strong tradition of Premier Customer Service, holding true to the philosophy and practice that understanding and serving the needs of the client was, and still is, the reason for our business. Continuing in this legacy was Ray’s nephew, Arlen Speckman. After an Army tour of duty in Colorado and France, returning to Illinois to marry and have 3 children, and working as a cattle broker in the Chicago stockyards, Arlen joined Speckman Realty under Ray’s leadership and began learning the real estate brokerage.

In 1975 Arlen Speckman purchased the business and became the Managing Broker. The company then began to grow in many ways. In 1979, Speckman became a member of what is now GMAC Real Estate and Home Services.

Keeping local ownership of the company was vital to Arlen. So was the understanding that buyers, sellers and agents could benefit form services offered through a franchise partnership which provided relocation services, referral networks, affiliate relationships with other corporate operations as well as educational and networking opportunities that could not be provided outside the franchise operation. In 1980, Arlen served as the President of the Illinois Association of Realtors, bringing a better understanding of how state, national and global factors function and still allow and even demand that real estate is still understood best in terms of a local market. In 1989, Speckman purchased Munyon Real Estate, expanding the company to 3 offices, Kankakee, Momence and Bourbonnais. In the early 1990’s Speckman opened offices in Manteno and Watseka, expanding the company’s service area and customer base.

Many transitions have taken place since that time at Speckman, internet based multiple listing services have come in to play, web based marketing and advertising are an integral part of our day to day activities, changes from seller and sub-agency to designated agency relationships with clients and customers, interest rates have risen, fallen and risen again… but all the while Speckman Realty has stood as a leader in the local market. Speckman Realty GMAC provides premier service and that allows us to build long-term relationships with our clients. In 2007, lifelong Kankakee resident, long-time business owner and Speckman Realtor Peter Grant joined Arlen in the ownership and leadership of this company. Together, Grant and Speckman set out on a new path, once again seeking more effective and efficient ways of understanding and meeting the needs of today’s clients and customers. The acquisition of local real estate companies, the development of more advantageous affiliate relationships, creation of new web sites and internet marketing agendas to meet the needs of clients and customers on the move …are just some of the steps already taken on the continued path of success for Speckman Realty Inc., GMAC.
